From Our Educational Director

It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you and your children to a world of educational experiences at Beth David. I am delighted to be the director of a school with over 330 students including, 32 post-Confirmation students in a division of Gratz College. It is certainly an honor and a privilege to have been a part of such a positive and exciting adventure in education since the summer of 1992.

Parents are the key to making the school process a positive one. Motivation is on the top of the list to help your child attend school and participate regularly. Become involved in congregational activities, and help your young students with homework assignments, attending services, and youth group events. It is our goal to help you instill a love of Judaism through practice and deed, giving your children the most appropriate Jewish education in accordance with Reform Jewish practice. We assess the quality of our school twice a year, providing a wealth of information to the parents and faculty as we closely monitor each child's progress from Kindergarten through Grade 12.

We are continuing to make amazing and successful changes in the school, from the classrooms to the textbooks. Our 25 teachers and 34 assistants (who are themselves students in Grades 7 to 12) are here to work with your children and reinforce our themes of cabayd vih hahahroochah (respect and responsibility).

If you have any questions, please stop by the school. I wish you the very best and together we can look forward to a productive and happy school experience.

Confirmation

Our Confirmation program affords the opportunity for our teenagers, with their increasing maturity, to deal in depth with spiritual and ethical issues from a Jewish perspective. Now, at 15 or 16 years of age, they are better prepared than they were at Bar/Bat Mitzvah to make the kind of emotional and intellectual search and commitment to Judaism that Confirmation involves. As a group, the students meet each week with the Rabbi and other teachers to discuss the richness of our heritage, to probe for answers to moral questions, and to seek their own paths to God. This study culminates in the inspirational ceremony of Confirmation, held on Shavuot, in which the students lead the service, read from the Torah, and offer personal prayers and thoughts as they reflect on their Judaism.

A high point of the Confirmation year is the trip to RAC (the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism) in Washington, D.C., to participate with Jewish teenagers from all over the U.S. in an intensive four-day program focusing on Jewish social justice values, the legislative process, and the political and the social reality we need to transform our society. The visit culmiantes in a day on Capitol Hill, where students lobby their Senators' and Representatives' offices on the issues they have just studied. There is also an opportunity to tour the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, participate in Havdalah services at the Lincoln Memorial, and sample the night life of Georgetown and other exciting areas in Washington.
